WD400 raises quality and efficiency on metallurgy strip-production lines

Strip is an essential material for continuous, high-speed metallurgy production. From uncoiling and levelling to rolling and coiling, every step depends on stable coordination of speed, tension and torque. For a production line that operates over the long term, drive response, energy use and maintenance status directly affect product consistency and delivery rhythm.

Control challenges in continuous strip processing

In high-speed start-stop, changing coil diameter and multi-machine coordination, conventional mechanical transmission can cause tension fluctuation, impact and transmission loss. Noise, lubrication maintenance and energy consumption can also increase lifecycle cost. The customer therefore needed a more controllable and efficient drive upgrade while retaining as much of the existing process equipment as possible.

An upgrade approach built around the existing line

The project focused on low-speed, high-torque drive and control-system improvement, balancing continuous production, rapid response and maintenance convenience. Based on the site process rhythm, changing coil diameter and operating windows, the Wolong team reviewed the transmission chain and introduced WD400 high-performance variable-frequency drives into the key control stages of the strip line.

During operation, WD400 can adjust motor output according to line-speed and tension requirements, making the transition between uncoiling, conveying and coiling smoother. Together with site feedback signals, it can help reduce acceleration and deceleration impact and the risk of strip deviation. For a line that runs continuously, this process-led control approach also creates a clearer basis for stable operation and energy optimisation.

WD400 value in strip-production applications

A strip-production line needs more than a single VFD; it needs a drive system that matches the process rhythm. WD400 high-performance control can be used for speed tracking, torque delivery and multi-stage operating-parameter management, helping the site adapt to different strip specifications, coil diameters and production tempos. Establishing stable control boundaries at key machines lets the line handle load variation more confidently.

After the upgrade, the line improved its operational smoothness, processing accuracy and production organisation. The original case targeted around 25% overall energy savings and more than 20% higher daily output. Reducing the maintenance demand of conventional mechanical transmission components also helps limit the production impact of shutdowns.

Support from delivery to long-term operation

Wolong provided end-to-end support from site investigation and solution matching through installation and commissioning. After commissioning, the team continued to assist with operating parameters, fault response and later optimisation, helping the customer turn the transmission upgrade into lasting production capability. The case shows how a WD400-centred drive-control solution can integrate with metallurgy strip processes and support better quality, efficiency and greener production.
